When I prepared a unit plan based on place values and decimals there were several big questions that I was faced with, One of the biggest questions I faced though out the whole process of planning the project was the question dealing with, "what do the students already know?" Since we were starting a completely knew topic in the class I was unsure what was going to be information that the students have already covered and would understand and what I would be teaching the students for the first time. When i was trying to write out each days activities I had no idea if the activity was going to take 5 minutes or if it would require me explaining the assignment working on different examples and going through the problem step by step. An idea that I had to help me know where the students are in their understanding of place values is to have a pre-assessment where I could see what the students knew and I knew what needed to be worked on.
My Goal is that the students have a firm grasp on place values so that they can start working on multiplying and dividing numbers that have 10th and 100ths in the number and to also have them recognize what each number represents. For me to understand where the students are I will be having a pre-assesment as well as having worksheets and a quiz or two throughout the unit. By having something that the students are required to fill out it will help me understand where the students are. To help the students learn what they need to for this unit I will be using the overhead project to be sharing projects and sharing examples and having the students share how to solve the problems. I will also be having unit blocks and other manipulative so that there are multiple means of representation so that the students will hopefully have a deeper understanding. Going into this unit there is no previous skills required since the topic is the start of a new unit. This will be the foundation of the students ability to preform multiplication and division problems with decimals.
