Integration of Faith and Learning
In my unit plan on place values, I want to be able to display my faith through my curriculum and through my actions. Since I'm in at Godfrey-Lee (A public school), I know that religion is a topic that cant be brought up directly especially with dealing with what I as a teacher believe. However, through my interactions and my relationships with my students I am able to show examples of being a follow of Christ. Being a Christian shapes how I act and react to situations in the classroom. Even though the topic we are talking about is a Math topic and it’s hard to incorporate Faith in something that is facts. Throughout my unit, I want to implement my faith in what I'm teaching, Even though the ways that I incorporate faith will be small.
Although I haven’t been able to find any direct correlation between my beliefs and place values there are a lot of things that the bible talks to us about being good stewards with what has been given to us. One way that we can be good stewards is to be smart with how we spend our money and being able to budget correctly and know how much we can spend and just being smart with our personal finances. If we are confident in our math abilities and we are smart and frugal with our finances I feel as though we are honoring God by being smart with what he has given us.
As a teacher in a school, which has a lot of under privileged students, my faith plays a huge role in how I interact with the students and how I treat them. We are told in Galatians 3:28 that ,”There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” even though school maybe a struggle for some of these students, there is not reason to look down on them. I need to be gracious and compassionate but at the same time encouraging them to strive for excellence and to do their best. If anything I need to give these students more attention since they are probably not getting the 1-1 attention they need at home.
Another aspect that is incorporated is having the students work together in groups on some lessons to allow students to work together. In the bible we often are told that we are the body of Christ and we need to work together. I feel as though its important that students learn to work together and create community in the classroom. As well as having a stronger community I feel as though group work prepares students for real world situations where they will have to learn to work together.
In our text book In Christian Teachers in Public schools it says, “The modern child must actively realize that he or she is born into a condition of possibilities. He or she is this body of possibilities. To become a person, to grow up and to become educated, is to transform one’s contingency into commitment responsibility- one must choose a life”(Stronks, 1999). Students are able to decided what they believe however I still need to be a light for Christ even if I am not vocal about it.
